Making it Happen: Managing Urinary Incontinence and Protecting Patients' Skin

Presented by Carmen Davis MSN, RN, CCRN, CNS-BC

This presentation offers an overview of the prevalence, costs and risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI), incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), and pressure injury (PI). We will examine how one phenomenon can lead to another, along with strategies to help prevent and manage these conditions in the clinical setting. Basic physiology will be reviewed to support understanding potential etiologies and best practice treatment strategies. Change management approaches will be discussed to help our team members adopt best practices and improve patient outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Describe the role of UI in skin integrity.
  • Explain the association of IAD and the development of PI.
  • List strategies to prevent and/or manage UI, IAD, and PI.
  • Identify change management approaches to implementing best practices in the clinical setting.
