VariAx 2 Distal Radius and VariAx 2 Distal Ulna

Variable Angle Locking Plate System

The VariAx 2 Distal Radius and VariAx 2 Distal Ulna Plating Systems provides you with a comprehensive range of anatomic plating options that work with a common instrument and screw platform. Plates utilize SmartLock technology which permits polyaxial screw placement. You can angle locking screws up to 15˚in each direction for a total range of 30˚ providing you with the flexibility to position screws based on the patient, not a plate’s pre-existing design.

Plating that fits

SOMA designed

Only by truly understanding the challenges you face can we offer a portfolio to best fit your needs. With anatomically contoured plates designed or validated using our proprietary SOMA technology, streamlined instrumentation, and trained representatives, our plating portfolio is designed with you in mind.

¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ plating portfolio ranges from indication specific plates and patented Smartlock technology to streamlined instrumentation for ease-of-use in the OR. Helping to solve complicated fractures with simple innovative solutions – Plating that fits.

Stryker Orthopaedic Modeling and Analytics, or SOMA, consists of a database of over 19,500 3D bones generated from CT scans of patients. This comprehensive database and proprietary software helps design a better fitting implant and allows for true evidence based design.

Why fit matters.

  • A well-fitting plate may reduce the need for bending during the procedure which is important for preserving locking technology.1
  • Reduced need for intra operative plate bending may allow for improved OR efficiency.1
  • A well-fitting plate may result in reduction of soft tissue impingement and might decrease the risk of skin irritations.1
  • A well-fitting plate can help with fracture alignment.1

Features & Benefits:

Volar Plating Options:

The VariAx Distal Radius anatomic volar plate is offered in narrow, intermediate and standard width options with a volar tilt designed to aid in anatomic reduction.  The intermediate plate is estimated to fit 83% of the patient population.  All widths offered in 49mm (3 hole), 56mm (4 hole), and 76 (7 hole) lengths.  Only 1 drill bit and 1 screwdriver blade is used for all sized screws and pegs.

Narrow anatomic volar plate

Narrow anatomic volar plate

The anatomic volar plates adhere to the two-column fixation principle. The 2 pre-tilted radial styloid screw holes allow screws to capture radial styloid fragments. The watershed line design allows for enhanced buttressing of DRUJ and volar lunate facet.

Intermediate anatomic volar plate

Intermediate anatomic volar plate

The distal screw holes in the anatomic plates are angled to give a pre-determined screw pattern in the distal bone block. The image here shows the various trajectories. When drilling at a 0° angle relative to the plate hole, the screw trajectories shown here relative to the plate surface will be achieved. This is also the screw pattern achieved when using an aiming block.

The Universal Volar Plate is the non-anatomic volar plate option that still has a bend to help re-establish the volar tilt after fixating the plate.  All circular holes are capable of accepting locking and non-locking screws and pegs and have Smartlock Technology to allow for variable angled locking.

Dorsal Plating options:

Stryker's dorsal plate offering includes 2 widths (narrow and wide) for the standard dorsal plate that should be placed slightly proximal to the distal edge of the dorsal distal radius to avoid inserting screws/pegs into the joint. The fixed angled screw trajectory provides support to the subchondral surface and the distal portion of the plate is partially thickened to promote screw head protection within the 15 degree variable angle arc. The distal lateral aspect of the plate can be bent along the groove with bending pliers to better match patient anatomy.

Stryker has also released, for the first time, a dorsal medial and dorsal lateral plating option.  The plates can be used independent of each other and sit on either side of Lister’s tubercle (medial plate on the medial side and the lateral plate on the lateral side.  The most distal end of the plates has K-wire holes for additional fixation and the plate tapers down to 0.75mm to stay low-profile as it gets closer to the articular surfaces.

Lateral Plating options:

The lateral plate's new design is based on SOMA-data for an improved anatomic fit and additional K-wire holes around the most distal hole for additional fixation options.

Lateral DR Plate

Volar Rim Plate:

Stryker’s volar rim plate should be placed above volar capsule on the volar ulnar corner. The vertical K-wire slots allow for distal or proximal adjustment and the horizontal K-wire slots allow for lateral or medial adjustment of the plate. The hooks and K-wires together help reduce the fracture and once stabilized the plate can be fully fixated using the proximal screw holes.

Wrist Spanning Plate:

Stryker’s wrist spanning plate is another new addition to the distal radius plating line and comes in 2 sizes.  If the fracture is deemed necessary of the wrist spanning plating technique, this plate can be oriented so 4 central holes are over the carpal bones and distal radius. Check that the placement of the most distal screw holes are over the 2nd or 3rd metacarpal and the oblong hole is placed proximally.

Distal Ulna Plating Options:

The VariAx 2 DU Hook Plate is designed with a hook to grab very small styloid fragments which cannot be fixed with screws. The DU Base Plate has more screw options distally by placing the screw holes in a zig-zag cluster for metaphyseal fracture fixation. The DU Base Plate also comes in left and right sided options. All of the Distal Ulna plates are available in short and long plate options and have been designed with an oblong hole that can be used to compress if it’s desired.

XXL Plating Options:

There are sixteen additional plates in 73.8mm (5 hole), 100mm (8 hole),145mm (11 hole) and 189mm (15 hole) lengths and Standard and narrow widths in left and right anatomic shapes. These plates are pre-contoured design to fit the radial bow. The stronger plate design includes a smooth transition from 2 to 3mm at the meta-diaphyseal intersection of the plate and the pre-angled and Z-shaped screw hole configuration in the shaft. The Higher profile plate design allows for stronger fixation in osteotomies, mal-unions and non-unions.

Screw and Peg Options:

The VariAx 2 screws allow for ±15 degrees of angulation. A lip on the drill sleeve will engage and allow toggling in the hole. The range in which the drill guide toggles will create a 30-degree cone and every angle in  this range will be a locking position. This may allow the surgeon to aim where the screw / peg should be placed. Also, depending on the placement of the plate, there may be a need to angle a screw/ peg out of the fracture line. The 2.0mm drill guide for T8 Screws facilitates drilling a 2.0mm pilot hole for a 2.4 or 2.7mm T8 screw or a 2.0mm peg centrically for locking or non-locking screws.
